Fred W. Hayes and "Maggie" Hargett

Frederick Watson Hayes was born in Union County on January 16, 1882 to William Thomas Hayes and Elizabeth Josephine Haywood. On July 19, 1905, Fred married Margaret Louisa "Maggie" Hargett, both of Vance Township. "Maggie" was born May 26, 1883, the daughter of James Robertson Hargett and Louisa Jane Martin, also of Union County (See Hargett Family Tree).

Fred and "Maggie" were parents of:
  • Verla Louisa Hayes (1906‒1991) married Clyde Herman Long in 1926.
  • Alice Josephine Hayes (1907‒1975) married Henry Thomas Eason about 1930.
  • Stacey Brevard Hayes (1910‒1979) married Ethel Mae Yandle in 1934. 
  • Winifred Isabel "Winnie" Hayes (1912‒1976) married Elmer P. Goree in 1940.
  • Frederick Watson Hayes (1912‒1915) 
  • James Thomas "Nelson" (1916‒1993) married Willie Ruth Hughes in 1938.
  • Grayson Hayes (1918‒1980) married Eleanor Mae Bass in 1943.
  • Margaret Hayes (1921‒2015) married Roy Harvey Bley in 1941.
  • Franklin Walter (1924‒1978) married Minnie Craig in 1946.
  • Steve Weldon Hayes (1927‒2009) married Margie Helms in 1948. 
The 1910 census found Fred and "Maggie" on their own farm in South Monroe, with Verla 4, Alice 2, and infant Henry C. Hayes.

During World War I, Fred served in the United States Army at Fort Fisher, NC. It is believed that he served from 1915 to 1917, but did not go overseas. 

The 1920 Monroe Census recorded Fred W. 36, Maggie 36, Verla 13, Alice 12, Stacey 9, Winnie Bell 7, Nelson 3, and 17-month-old Grayson.

The 1930 census recorded Fred W. 48, Margaret 47, Stacy 20, Winnie B. 18, Nelson 14, Grayson 12, Margaret 9, Frank 5, and 3-year-old Steve. 

Frederick Watson Hayes died May 6, 1949. Margaret Louisa Hargett Hayes died October 18, 1962
