"Winnie" Hayes and Elmer Goree

Winifred "Winnie" Isabel Hayes, daughter of Fred and Maggie Hayes, was born March 22, 1912. On the 1920 Monroe Census, she was recorded as Winnie Bell.

The 1940 census recorded Winifred I. Hayes in Cecil County, Maryland, where she was a roomer in a "Nurses Home" and worked as a dental assistant at a Veterans Administration Facility. The census noted her residence in 1935 as Portsmouth, Virginia. On August 17, 1940, "Winnie" married Elmer Porter Goree. They made an especially handsome couple!

Elmer was born in Louisiana in 1906 to Cornelius James Goree and Ada Ellen Barton. Elmer enlisted in the Marine Corp on January 16, 1925, in Parris Island, South Carolina. In 1928, he spent two weeks in a naval hospital in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.

Elmer's 1935 residence was Parris Island, South Carolina. By the 1940 census, he was living in Dumfries, Virginia on a "Marine Reservation" as a 1st Sergeant. After Elmer married "Winnie," they remained in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Winifred Isabel Hayes Goree died in Portsmouth, Virginia, December 18, 1976 and was buried in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, Virginia. Elmer died June 21, 1980 in Charleston, South Carolina, and was buried in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, Virginia.
Patricia married William Joseph "Billy" Self on April 9, 1966. 
He was born March 13, 1941. Patricia and Billy were parents of Joseph Wesley Self, born September 20, 1968. Joseph married Melissa Ann Looney on April 27, 2002, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
