Fred W. Hayes and "Maggie" Hargett

Fred and Maggie Hayes about 1948
Frederick Watson Hayes was born in Union County on January 16, 1882 to William Thomas Hayes and Elizabeth Josephine Haywood. On July 19, 1905, Fred married Margaret Louisa "Maggie" Hargett, both of Vance Township. "Maggie" was born May 26, 1883, the daughter of James Robertson Hargett and Louisa Jane Martin, also of Union County (See Hargett Family Tree).

John Nelson Hays (c.1833‒) and Margaret Gay

As noted on the Union County marriage record above, "Nelson Hays" married Margaret Gay on April 15, 1852. The name on the marriage index for that period, below, matches that record. Nelson, however, appears to have been his middle name. It is likely he used the name Nelson to differentiate himself from his father,  John Hays (c.17971878), who was in Mecklenburg/Union County by 1830.

There is some confusion as to Nelson's first name. The 1860 census, below, recorded his name as "John" N. Hays. When he enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862, he enrolled as "John" N. Hays. However, there is one document noting his first name as "Thomas" Nelson Hayes: It is the 1924 death certificate of his son William Thomas Hayes. The informant on the death certificate is Fred W. Hayes, W.T. Hayes' son. In 1924, John Nelson Hays had been missing from the Union County records for 59 years, since the end of the Civil War in 1865. Fred W. Hayes, born 1882, never knew his grandfather and likely guessed at his first name. That explanation seems to be the most probable explanation for the discrepancy. We believe the correct name of this most important direct ancestor is John Nelson Hays. It appears the "e" was added to the Hays spelling during the lifetime of his wife and children, first noted on the 1870 census below, when Margaret was noted as a widow.

John Nelson Hays' wife, Margaret Gay, was born on May 19, 1833, possibly in Kershaw County, South Carolina, to Thomas Nathanial Knox "TN" Gay and Bethany Bass. The 1850 Kershaw County South Carolina Census recorded: Margaret Gay 18, in household with "Thenia" 43, George W. 21, Martha 22, Isaac 16, Jesse 15, and 12-year-old twins Nathaniel and William Thomas Gay.

Nelson and Margaret had a son and daughter before the Civil War began:

From the 1860 Union County Census
The 1860 Union County Census P.O. Monroe, recorded: John N. Hays 25, carpenter, with Margaret 26, Thomas 5, and Margaret E. 2; personal estate $50.

John N. Hays left his wife of ten years, a 7-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter to serve the Confederacy. He and younger brother, William N. Hays both enlisted in the Confederate Army on March 8, 1862. John was 28 with a birth year listed as 1834. His unit was the 10th Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery, Company C, a regiment organized on May 19, 1862. Our direct ancestor went in with the rank of Private and was released as a Private. The 10th Battalion surrendered with the Army of Tennessee on April 26, 1865. John Nelson Hays was released from service that same day. What happened next is murky.

The 1870 Union County Census Buford Township, P.O. Monroe, recorded" widow* Margaret Hayes 38, William 13, and Margaret 10. They were recorded near two other Gay households, one headed by Parthenia Gay 62 [probably Margaret's mother; the other household headed by Nathaniel Gay [perhaps Margaret's brother.] *The mystery: Though Margaret Gay Hayes was recorded as a widow on this census; no death certificate has been found for husband John Nelson Hays.
The 1880 Mecklenburg County Census recorded Margaret Gay Hayes as a  47-year-old widow living in Clear Creek Township, with farmer/son William Thomas Hayes 24, Elizabeth 23, and two daughters, 2-year-old Minnie and 1-year-old Bessie Hayes.

Margaret Gay Hayes died September 1, 1895. She was buried in the Gay Family Cemetery in Alton, Union County, off highway 207.

On September 14, 2000, Steve & wife Margie Hayes, Tom "Bubber" Hayes and Eleanor Hayes, widow of Grayson Hayes drove to the Gay family Cemetery in the Alton community of Union County, NC. The headstone for Margaret Gay Hayes was located, but the grave site for John Nelson Hays was not found.

William Thomas Hayes 1857‒1924 and Elizabeth Josephine Haywood

William Thomas Hayes was born June 7, 1857, to John Nelson Hayes and Margaret Gay. On April 4, 1877, farmer William (also known as Thomas) married Elizabeth Josephine Haywood, born April 1862.

The 1880 census found William 24, Elizabeth 23, Minnie 2, and 1-year-old Bessie N., with widowed mother Margaret G. Hayes 45, in Clear Creek, Mecklenburg County.

William Thomas Hayes 1924 Death Certificate

By 1900, William and Elizabeth were in Monroe with Fred W. 18, Arthur Boyce 16, Donna 13, Ernest 11, Robert F. 10, Harry F. 6, William Dowd 3, and infant Herman. Thomas Clyde was born in 1901.

The 1920 Union County Census noted William and Elizabeth in Vance Township, with Ernest 30, Herman 19, and 18-year-old Clyde.

Elizabeth died May 12, 1921 and William died November 7, 1924.

NOTE: Tom Hayes (son. of Herman N. Hayes, Sr.) remembers his father talking about his father (William Thomas Hayes). He said that Thomas liked to wrestle. It was said that he could take two men on at one time and beat them. Another interesting bit of information was that Henry and William Belk of the Belk Department Stores raised William Thomas and his sister Margaret Elizabeth Haywood Hayes inherited the Hayes homestead on the railroad tracks at Stouts.

William and Elizabeth were parents of:

"Winnie" Hayes and Elmer Goree

Winifred "Winnie" Isabel Hayes, daughter of Fred and Maggie Hayes, was born March 22, 1912. On the 1920 Monroe Census, she was recorded as Winnie Bell.

The 1940 census recorded Winifred I. Hayes in Cecil County, Maryland, where she was a roomer in a "Nurses Home" and worked as a dental assistant at a Veterans Administration Facility. The census noted her residence in 1935 as Portsmouth, Virginia. On August 17, 1940, "Winnie" married Elmer Porter Goree. They made an especially handsome couple!

Elmer was born in Louisiana in 1906 to Cornelius James Goree and Ada Ellen Barton. Elmer enlisted in the Marine Corp on January 16, 1925, in Parris Island, South Carolina. In 1928, he spent two weeks in a naval hospital in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.

Grayson Hayes and Eleanor Bass

Grayson and Eleanor Hayes
When Grayson (NMI) Hayes was born, in Monroe, NC on July 10, 1918, his father, Frederick Watson Hayes, Sr. was 36 and his mother Margaret Louisa Hargette, of Union County, was 35.  Interestingly, Grayson's mother, Maggie, was something of a history student.  During her pregnancy with him, she read about a Revolutionary War hero named Casimir Pulaski.  She gave Grayson the middle name of Pulaski.  He hated the name, and legally had it dropped some time during his military service.

From 1941 Passenger List
At age 18, Grayson enlisted in Battery F 113th Field Artillery of the National Guard; he served 2 years, 39 days.

On the 1940 Monroe Census, 21-year-old Grayson was recorded as a farm laborer, with farmer father F. Watson Hayes 58, mother L. Margaret 57, and siblings Margaret 19, Frank 15, and 13-year-old Steve Hayes.

On November 12, 1943, Grayson married Eleanor Mae Bass in Clovis, New Mexico.
Eleanor was born October 27, 1922 in Matthews, Mecklenburg County, NC to Jesse Rea Bass Sr. and Lola Asbury Deese. Eleanor was a 1940 graduate of Charlotte Commercial College. She worked in the Quartermaster Office at Morris Field in Charlotte and at the Hospital Office of the Air Base in Amorilla, Texas during WWII. After the war, Eleanor worked for the Farmers Home Administration, USDA, and retired in 1982 as District Loan Assistant.

On November 11, 1947, while in school at NC State College, Grayson enlisted in the Army National Guard; he retired July 30, 1978 as Lieutenant Colonel. His total service (for pay purposes) was 32 years, 6 months, and 19 days. Roy later served as a pilot, transporting the North Carolina governor for three terms.

Frank Hayes

Frank's World War II enlistment was dated July 21, 1944, at Fort Bragg. At the time, he had completed high school and was a "farm hand;" his reported weight was 100 pounds.

Medals won: American Theater, EAME Service Medal with one Bronze Star; Good Conduct Medal; World War II Victory Medal.

Minnie "Pete" Craig Hayes

"Pete" Hayes said Frank was an expert marksman both at home (hunting rabbits) and while in the 82 Airborne. After Frank’s training at Fort Bragg NC, Frank was sent overseas to France during WWII. This was toward the end of the war. It seems that Frank’s marksmanship was highly respected. Once in France and then moved in to Germany, he was assigned personally to General Ridgeway as the General's guard. Frank stood guard at the General’s tent at night and was with the General during the day. Frank made several paratrooper jumps while in Germany. This was done mostly at night. He always said he was "pushed" rather than jumping on his own.
