FREDERICK BREVARD HAYES served in the US Army from l959-1961 and was stationed in Waco, Texas. He was in the army when he married his first wife, Joan. He and Joan lived in Waco Texas until he was discharged.

Following is the obituary for Frederick Brevard Hayes: Frederick Brevard Hayes, Sr., 65, of Spartanburg, SC died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

A native of Monroe, NC, but raised in Rock Hill, SC; son of the late Stacey Brevard Hayes (1909–1979) and Ethel Yandle Hayes (1916–1996); widower of Norma "Joan" Harvey Hayes (1937–1980).

A 1957 graduate of Wofford College, retired from Van Waters and Rogers, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Rev. Mary J. Cartledge-Hayes; daughters, Deborah J. Hayes, Tara A. Flowers, and Jennifer F. Libby; sons, Frederick Brevard Hayes Jr. and Steve H. Hayes; sister, Vernice Nies; brothers, Melvin Hayes (1936–2022) and Bruce Hayes; and five grandchildren.

The family received friends from 7:00 - 9:00 pm, Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

The funeral was held at 11:00 am, Thursday, April 6, 2000, at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Revs. A. Mickey Fisher and Lisa Creech Bledsoe; burial at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorials could be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or Gravely Memorial United Methodist Church, Spartanburg, SC.
