Born in Union County on December 13, 1859, Margaret Ellen "Maggie" Hayes was the daughter of John Nelson Hays and Margaret Gay. About 1882, "Maggie" married farmer Thomas Irwin Hagler (1853-1924). Thomas Hagler was born in Charlotte to Charles George "Charlie" Hagler and Mary "Polly" Honeycutt. They family was recorded in Union County in 1860.
In 1900, Thomas and “Maggie” had been married 18 years and were on a farm in Mt. Pleasant, Cabarrus County, with Daisy 17, Carry 15, T. Luther 12, P. DeArmon 7, Charlie 3, and infant A. Mamie Hagler.
By 1910, they were noted as farming in Clear Creek, Mecklenburg County, with Thomas Luther 22, Phillip D. 17, Charlie 13, Margaret Emma 7. (At this time, "Maggie" had given birth to 8 children, with 5 then living.)
In her brother’s 1924 WILL, he (William Thomas Hayes 1857-1924) left “Maggie” $100.
By 1930, “Maggie” was a widow, living at 526 Ridge Street in Charlotte with her son Phillip's family.
“Maggie" died June 23, 1936, in Thomasboro, Mecklenburg County (P.O. Charlotte) and was buried in Arlington Baptist Church Cemetery in Charlotte, with husband Thomas, who died in 1924.
“Maggie” and Thomas’ children, buried with them in Arlington, were Daisy Elizabeth Hagler Helms (1883-1951) and Phillip DeArmon Hagler (1893-1960).
