▪ BESSIE M. HAYES (1879‒1880) was born June 19, 1879, and died August 1, 1880. She was buried in Mint Hill, Mecklenburg County.
▪ WALTER HAYES (1880‒1952) was born in Union County. By 1900 he was a lodger in Danville, Virginia, where he was a weaver in a cotton mill. On January 5, 1905, in Danville, Walter married Nannie Lewis Williamson (1878-1969), daughter of Benjamin Alfred Williamson and Martha Anne Irby. By 1910, Walter and Nannie owned a home at 808 Claiborne Street in Danville. Walter was an “operator” at the cotton mill. Son Frederick Amiss Hayes was four years old. By 1920, Walter was recorded as a house carpenter and owned a mortgage-free home at 516 Keen Street in Danville, there with Nannie 42, Amiss 14, Helen 6, and infant Jack Hayes. Bu 1930, Walter and Nannie were in the same home, there with Helen 15 and 10-year-old Jack; at the time, he was a mechanic in an auto shop. The 1940 Danville Census recorded the family in the same house. Walter was a “refrigerator engineer” at the cotton mill; home value $3500. At home were Nancy L. 62, Minnie Helen 25, Jack Irby 20, and 30-year-old niece Mary Helen Denny. Walter died March 17, 1952 and was buried in Highland Burial Park in Danville.
▪ FREDERICK WATSON HAYES (1882‒1949) married Margaret Louisa “Maggie” Hargett in 1905.
▪ MAUDE HAYES (1884‒1939) – At age 16, Maude married 20-year-old Young Teasdel Garrison in 1900. Maude and Young had 13 children in 25 years. By 1910, they had a farm on Rocky River Road, Monroe, Union County, there with five children, Sular Elizabeth 9, Anna Belle 5, Young Thomas 4, Walter Lewis 2, and infant James Milton Garrison. By 1920, four more children had been added to the household, Minnie 8, C.J. 5, Mamie Lee 3, and 1-year-old William Dowd Garrison. By 1930, the family was recorded on Stouts Road, Vance, Union County; three more children had been born, Mary Hinds 7, Bobbie Elizabeth 6, and 4-year-old Nancy Josephine Garrison. Maude Hayes Garrison died in 1939 at the age of 55, and was buried in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery, along with other family members.
▪ ARTHUR BOYCE HAYES (1884‒1942) married Mamie Estelle Stroup in 1909. The 1930 Charlotte Census recorded Arthur and Mamie owning their home, with Arthur B. Hayes Jr. 19 and Thomas Pierce Hayes 17, with boarders Nannie Stroup 39, James T. Garrison 30, and Lee Boyette 25. Arthur was noted as a Barber (Smith & Cranford) – industry “Tonsorial;” home valued at $5000. Arthur died March 12, 1942 at the age of 57.
▪ ALDA "ALLIE" HAYES (1885‒1958) married Gaston Covington Garrison in 1900. At the time of their marriage, “Allie” was 15, Gaston was 23. By 1910, they had a farm on Rocky River Road, there with Thomas Morgan 8, Franklin Mordecai 5, Irene 4, Herbert Gaston 2, and infant Lucille Nancy. By 1920, Kate 7, Mary 4, Harry George 2, and 1-year-old Ernest Lane had been added to the household. The 1930 census recorded four more children, Jack 9, Emma 7, Margie 5, and 3-year-old Janice. (Son Franklin was accidentally killed by a truck in Oxford, Granville County, on September 9, 1932, at the age of 28. The 1940 Monroe Census recorded “Allie” as a widow, owner of home, and manager of the farm, with five children at home. “Allie” died February 24, 1958 and was buried in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.
▪ DONIE ELIZABETH HAYES (1887‒1942) married William Hampton Kindley on November 19, 1914. By 1920, they were on Pineville Road in Charlotte, with Elizabeth 3, and infant Mary. By 1930, the family was in Monroe with another daughter Sarah 7; William was a mechanic in a garage
▪ ERNEST F. HAYES (1889‒1931) married Bertha Lee Williams on December 28, 1920. Bertha Lee was daughter of John Amos Williams and Nancy Jane Little. The 1930 Charlotte Census recorded Ernest 41 (an automobile mechanic), Lee 36, Kathleen 8, and sister-in-law Lila Williams. Ernest died on March 16, 1931 at age 41 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Charlotte.
▪ ROBERT F. HAYES (c.1891‒) married Hattie B. Coleman on March 31, 1913 in Mecklenburg County. Hattie was born August 11, 1892 in Montvale, Virginia; she died March 2, 1964 in Durham, NC. By 1930, Hattie (divorced) was recorded with daughter Dorothy Elizabeth Hayes 15, in Charlotte in the home of her parents Robert and Lillian Coleman.
▪ HARRY M. HAYES (1896‒1934) married Lela B. Caudle on June 11, 1923. Lela, born March 22, 1895 in Mecklenburg County, died February 19, 1928, due to pelvic inflammatory disease, at age 33; she was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte. Harry, born September 11, 1896, died November 11, 1934 of stomach cancer, at the age of 38. His death certificate, informant A.B. Hayes, noted Harry as a barber shop proprietor; his residence at the time was Y.M.C.A. He was also buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
▪ WILLIAM DOWD HAYES(1897‒1979, born April 21, 1897, married Elizabeth Allen (1901-1993) on September 28, 1920 in Mecklenburg County. William was also a barber; 1944 directory noted him as manager of Barringer Hotel Barber Shop. He died June 12, 1979 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte.
▪ HERMAN NELSON HAYES (1900‒1981) married Eula Norene Yandle on July 14, 1921 in Union County. The 1930 Monroe Census recorded the couple as home owners on a farm, with 1-year-old daughter Frances J. Hayes. Herman died November 9, 1981 and was buried in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.
▪ CLYDE THOMAS HAYES (1901‒1962) married Johnnie Bee White about 1927. The 1930 census found the couple renting a home in Atlanta, where Clyde was an automobile mechanic. By 1940, they owned a home in Decatur, Georgia. Clyde died on April 25, 1962 in Decatur, DeKalb County, Georgia. Johnnie Bee White Hayes died December 26, 1993 in Gainesville, Georgia; buried in Decatur.
