Daughter of John Presley and Annie Yandle Hargett
For the past twenty years, my sister, the late Louise Hargett Ketchum and her husband Everette Ketchum have been engaged in tracing and documenting our family history. Now, as the last of my particular branch, it falls my lot to be the progenitress of the current generation to complete their work for the enlightenment and edification of posterity.
It appears that the Hargetts, with many derivations of spelling of the name, began to leave the upper Rhine River valley in Germany in the early seventeen hundreds. Causes of the migration; destructive wars, Tyranny of Princes, Lords and Fiefs and religious persecution are well known to history. Some went to Roumania, some to Russia and many to America, which promised a new and better way of life. It was through the efforts of William Penn, who obtained a charter for his Province of Pennsylvania for the two-fold purpose of aiding suffering and persecuted humanity and advancing his own self interests, that we came.

Descendants settled in many states but we believe the largest contingents are in North Carolina, Georgia and Maryland. Of the original six who came, Johann Heinrich Hergel and Frederich Hergett settled in the Piedmont section and eastern part of North Carolina respectively. Both men are listed in history as early pioneers and carved a place in the history of the state for those to follow. Names were quickly anglicized to John Henry Hargett and Frederick Hargett.
We have documented copies of the land grants made by the Crown of England in the 1700s. The first Union County (then Mecklenburgh) grant was Stewarts Fork of Richardson Creek in the New Salem area for 200 acres. Presumably Lake Twitty, the Monroe city reservoir for water supply is a part of the original location. Several others followed in Anson and Mecklenburgh (now Union) counties totaling approximately 800 acres. There is much more of interest to pass on.
Descendants of Johann Heinrich Hergett Aka John Henry Hargett to Margaret Louisa Hargett who married Frederick Watson Hayes.
